Abstract
1,156,445. Mould-linings and core-coatings. STEEL CASTINGS RESEARCH & TRADE ASSOCIATION. 2 Feb., 1968, No. 5404/68. Heading B3F. [Also in Division C3] A paint for foundry moulds and cores, e.g. with sand surfaces, comprises an aqueous suspension of a granular refractory with an organic suspending agent and a complex sodium phosphate. The sodium phosphate forms a glass-like bond with the refractory on stoving and may be, e.g. sodium tripolyphosphate (Na 5 P 3 O 10 ) or sodium metaphosphate (NaPO 3 ) m where m # 6. The refractory may be zircon, silica, magnesia, magnesite, alumina, olivine or chromite. The suspending agent may be high viscosity sodium carboxymethylcellulose or hydroxyethylcellulose. Bentonite may also be present. Exemplified compositions comprise, in wt. per cent: zircon flour 70; sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (2À5% aqueous solution), 10-12; sodium hexametaphosphate, 1; bentonite 0-0À5; water 17-18À5. The stoving temperature may be 250‹ C., and the coating resists shock from molten metal up to 1350- 1650‹ C. A two-coat application is 0À020- 0À025 inch thick. The organic suspending agent decomposes and burns out during stoving and metal pouring.
