Abstract

[Also in Division B1] Flat folded filter papers for gas or liquid filters, are made by running a continuous strip 10 of paper through embossing means 27, 28, whereby the paper is compressed along transverse fold lines, and subsequently folding the paper along these lines (Fig. 7, not shown). As shown, the paper is embossed by rollers 27, 28 having alternate co-operating projections and recesses, and the intermediate parts of the rollers do not grip the paper, which is moved by rollers 23, 25. The rollers may alternatively have only co-operating projections, or a single roller may compress the material against a plane surface Rollers 27, 28 could be replaced by one or two vertically reciprocating dies. The fold line spacing may be adjusted by changing the rollers or dies, or by varying their speeds relative to that of the drive rollers 23, 25. The embossed strip 10 receives glued strings (87) for spacing the folds and then passes between further, grooved, drive rollers (79, 83) into a channel (77) of four angle-bars, whose variable spacing offers resistance to the strip, causing it to fold up (Figs. 6-8, not shown). The folded strip is cut into lengths.
