Abstract
1,152,330. Tuyeres. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 18 Nov., 1966 [19 Nov., 1965], No. 51758/66. Heading F4B. In a tuyere for introducing a reactive gas beneath the surface of a molten metal bath in a vessel for processing metal, the reactive gas stream leaving the end 38 of the blowpipe 36 is encircled by a concentric stream of inert gas from ports 72 formed by the fluted inner nozzle 56 and the outer nozzle 52. These nozzles are tapered to minimise the area facing the molten metal. The assembly is fitted through a hole in the metal vessel wall 10 and refractory lining 12 by means of a rectangular hole 14 in the lining, refractory block 16 and inner refractory cylinder 22. The annular space 45 between the blowpipe 36 and the cylinder 22 is filled with refractory packing 44. The steel tube 54 is supported at the rear by the packing 58, gland 60 and nut 62; and at the front by the outer nozzle 52 threaded to the steel pipe 48, which is in turn threaded into the socket 50 in the metal body 28.
