Abstract
1,186,007. Degassing molten metals. YAWATA IRON & STEEL CO. Ltd. April 26, 1967 [April 28, 1966], No. 19131/67. Heading C7D. [Also in Division F2] A transfer tube, for attachment to the lower part of a molten steel degassing vessel so as to suck and discharge molten steel, comprises inner and outer tubular metal cones 1, 5 with a clearance space 7 between the cores, the inner core 1 having a flange 2 whereby it may be joined to the bottom part of the said vessel and an upper inside lining 3, made e.g. of anti-corrosive and wear resistant firebricks preferably having a backing 11 of castable material, the outer metal core 5 being connected with the inside core 1 by an air-tight flanged joint 6, 6<SP>1</SP>, and a lower inside lining 4, e.g. of bricks 4 which preferably have high anti-spalling properties and an outside lining 10, e.g. of refractory material being supported, e.g. by a flange 13, on the outer core so that the outer core 5 with the linings 4, 10 can be removed from the inner core 1. High speed coolant gases can be introduced into, and withdrawn from, the space 7 by means of pipes 8, 9 respectively. In a modification the lining 4 is formed of gas permeable bricks so that gases, blown into the space 7, can permeate into the molten steel passing up the transfer tube, the gases acting to cool the lining 1 and being pre-heated before being introduced into the molten steel.
