Abstract
1,023,046. Bottling in a sterile atmosphere; packaging-machines. GEBR. STORK & CO'S APPARATENFABRIEK N.V. Sept. 9, 1963 [Sept. 17, 1962], No. 35437/63. Headings B8C and B8T. A method of filling and closing sterilized containers such as bottles and tins with a sterilized substance, which may be a liquid such as milk or a granular or powdered material, is carried out in a sterilized atmosphere, the substance being continuously fed to the containers from a distributer moved in synchronism with the containers which are themselves continuously carried into and through the sterile atmosphere. In the embodiment shown, bottles 6, filled with disinfectant from a tank 24 at a feed station 4, enter carriers 28 of a conveyer 3 which transfers the bottles into a sterile atmosphere 2 maintained within a housing 1. A disinfectant bath 10 seals the adjacent end 12 of the housing 1 and the bottles are initially carried below the liquid level in the bath and are subsequently emptied of disinfectant along path 8 of the conveyer. The sterilized substance is introduced through a pipe 14 terminating in four nozzles 15, which nozzles overhang funnels 17 of a distributer 16 moved synchronously with the conveyer 3. The rate of discharge from each nozzle 15 is so determined that each funnel 17 receives therefrom a quarter of the volume of a bottle 6. In this way the bottles are gradually filled as shown. In the event of discontinuities in the feeding of bottles the substance is caught by a plate 19 and passed to a sterilizer via a pipe 20. A closure device 18 (not described) provides the bottles with sterile closures, the bottles then passing through a tunnel 31 and partially through disinfectant in a second bath 11 to be picked up and discharged by a conveyer 33 and a conventional device 34. The outlet end 13 of the housing 1 is partly sealed by the liquid in bath 11 and partly by maintaining within the housing a pressure somewhat greater than atmospheric by means of a sterileair blower 21 so that entry of air through tunnel 31 is prevented. The conveyer 3 is submerged in bath 11 and so remains uncontaminated. A steam inlet 22 for the periodic sterilization of the entire assembly is also provided. In a second embodiment, Figs. 2-5 (not shown), the second disinfectant bath is dispensed with and the distributer 50 comprises an annular member 53 rotatable in a horizontal plane. The bottles are removed laterally from the housing by means of guide rails 54.
