Abstract

A steel alloy consists of: C 0.15-0.6%, Cr 1.4-1.8%, Ni 2.0-4.0%, Mo 0.6-1.2%, with Nb 0.03-0.1%, and/or V 0.06-0.2%, Mn 0-1.0%, and Fe as balance except for the impurities Si max. 0.05%, Al, P and S each max. 0.01%, O max. 20 p.p.m., H max. 5 p.p.m. and N max. 40 p.p.m. An ingot of the alloy may be deformed into plate, sheet, strip, rod or bar, and formed into structural members, e.g. for building submarines, docks or missiles, by hot-rolling, forging, bending, stamping, pressing, drawing or punching, prior to heat treatment, such as normalizing at 1700-1800 DEG F., air cooling to room temperature, then austenitizing at 1500-1650 DEG F., oil or water quenching to room temperature, and tempering above 1000 DEG F. and air cooling.
