Abstract

1,209,345. Making ferritic steel by annealing. YAWATA IRON & STEEL CO. Ltd. Jan. 12, 1968 [Jan. 14, 1967], No.1760/68. Heading C7A. A ferritic non-ridging stainless steel sheet or strip containing less than 0À15% C and 13 to 25% Cr is made by annealing a hot-rolled band of the steel in the range 900 to 1000‹C. in which austenite and ferrite phases co-exist, then cooling by aircooling or at a velocity higher than air-cooling e. g. at 300-400‹C. /min to form a ferrite structure containing a martensite dispersion phase, coldrolling the band of this structure in at least one step including a step in which reduction in thickness is morethan30%, and then finally annealing, e.g. at 750 to 860‹C. prior to gradual cooling to 700 to 500‹C. Cold-rolling may be effected in many steps with inter - mediate annealing. Prior to first annealing, the hot-rolled band may be cold-rolled by less than 30% reduction. A conventional process is disclosed wherein the hot-rolled band is annealed in a ferrite range of 800 to 860‹C. prior to cold-rolling and final annealing. Examples of steel compositions are specified within the limits: 0À04-0À07%C, 0À42- 0À75% Si, 0À38-0À57 Mn, 0À019-0À028% P, 0À006- 0À008% S, 16À12-17À78% Cr, with or without 0À12- 0À14% Ni and 0À1% Mo, the balance being Fe and impurities.
