Abstract
<PICT:1086135/C6-C7/1> <PICT:1086135/C6-C7/2> A Soderberg anode construction for aluminium electrolytic furnaces consists of a series of pre-baked slab anodes 1, 2, 3, mounted vertically and spaced apart with contact members 4 inserted in the interspaces and which are held in place by carbon paste. Preferably the contact members rest in pre-formed slots 9 cut in the slab face. The assembly is clamped together by frame members 13, provided with openings into which lifting members are inserted, to lower the construction as the anode is consumed in the melt. The carbon paste is consumed before the slab anodes, and when the contact members are withdrawn from the lower most line, channels are formed with the slots permitting gases to escape easily. The contact members 4 which are connected to the bus-bar, may alternatively be flat when pre-formed slots in the anode slabs are unnecessary.
