A shoe having an elastic insert 33 e.g. in the back strap of a backless shoe, has the edges of the insert 33 sandwiched between the upper 26 and the lining 20 which are joined together at their top edge by a roll-over seam 39. The insert 33 is assembled with the upper and lining when the upper is closed and during lasting the insert 33 is backed with non-stretchable material so that the upper can be tensioned during lasting. The non-stretchable material may be part of the upper or lining or a separate band of material, the non- stretchable material being removed after lasting. In a first embodiment a reinforcing band is adhered to a continuous lining and a continuous upper and a binding tape are stitched to the lining along their top edges, the outer surface of the upper being in face to face contact with the foot engaging surface of the lining. The upper is then cut away at the part to be occupied by the elastic insert and the ends of the elastic insert are stitched to the rear side of the lining. The upper is then folded over and secured to the rear side of the lining and insert to form the roll over seam and to sandwich the insert between the upper and lining. The assembly is then lasted and after lasting the lining is cut away from behind the insert to form the strap shown in Fig. 6. Alternatively the lining may be initially cut away leaving a continuous upper during lasting, or both may be cut away and a strap of inelastic material attached to the insert, the strip being removed after lasting.
