1,068,638. Boring earth etc; casings. JOHNSON CONSTRUCTION CO. A. B. Sept 11, 1964 [Sept. 11, 1963], No. 37294/64. Heading E1F. Drilling equipment comprises a percussive bit 13 carried by a drill rod 12, and a percussive bit 11 releasably coupled to and actuated by the rod. A coupling 24 which fixes the bit 11 to the rod has a bayonet connection with a coupling 20 fixed to the bit 11 which is rotatable on a pipe 10. The rod which has a protector 32 is rotated during drilling through soft overburden so that the bits have a percussive and rotary action, the bit 11 being followed by the pipe. When bedrock is reached drilling is stopped, rotation of the rod is reversed to withdraw the rod and bit 13, and a rod and bit having no connection with the bit 11 are inserted into the pipe and actuated to drill the bedrock. After the hole is completed the rod and its bit are withdrawn, a plastic tube is inserted into the pipe, and the pipe withdrawn leaving the tube.
