Abstract
1,089,268. Boring earth &c. GARDNERDENVER CO. March 1, 1965 [July 3, 1964], No. 8601/65. Heading E1F.. In a drill rig 20 a drill pipe 36a is unscrewed from a drill pipe 36b by means of a wrench 70 engaging flats 64b on the pipe 36b, and a member 72 driven by a motor 30 to rotate the pipe 36a, a coupling 10 .being interposed between the member and the pipe 36a to prevent unscrewing of the upper end of the pipe 36a before unscrewing its lower end. The member is rotatable with a sleeve 82; a shaft 88 and a wrench 102 being rotatable with, and axially movable on, the sleeve. During rotation of the member to unscrew the pipe 36a, the coupling is collapsed (Fig. 5) and as the pipe 36a is initially rotated relative to the coupling the wrench falls to engage flats 62a at the end of the pipe 36a to prevent further relative rotation between the pipe 36a and the member. After the lower end of the pipe 36a is unscrewed a pipe-rack 42 is swung into the rig and the lower end of the pipe is fixed to, and supported in, a socket 54. The coupling is extended to release the wrench from the flats 62a and the member is rotated to unscrew the upper end of the pipe from a sub 100 which is fixed to the shaft 88. Drilling fluid may be supplied to the string which may carry a percussive "down-the-hole" drill.
