Abstract

An antimicrobial detergent composition comprises by weight of the composition from 3 to 10% of a bacteriologically active phenolic compound, from 1 to 5% of a bacteriologically active polybromosalicylanilide, from 4 to 20% of a cleaning agent, an effective amount of a chelating agent such as the tetrasodium salt of ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid, from 4 to 88% of a C1-3 aliphatic alcohol and from 3 to 75% of water. Specified cleaning agents are alkali metal soaps, synthetic anionic detergents, e.g. alkyl sulphates, alkylaryl sulphonates and alkyl sulphonates, and nonionic detergents, e.g. polyoxyethylene ethers, polyoxyethylene esters of long chain fatty acids and fatty acid alkanolamides.ALSO:An antimicrobial composition comprises by weight of the composition from 3 to 10% of a bacteriologically active phenolic compound, from 1 to 5% of a bacteriologically active polybromosalicylanilide, from 4 to 20% of a cleaning agent, an effective amount of a chelating agent, from 4 to 88% of a C1-3 aliphatic alcohol and from 3 to 75% of water. Specified phenolic compounds are ortho-benzyl-parachlorophenol, para-tertiary-amyl phenol, orthophenyl phenol and ortho-phenyl-para-chlorophenol. Specified bromosalicylanilides are 3,4\sv,5-tribromosalicylanilide and a mixture of about equal parts by weight of 3,4\sv,5-tribromosalicylanilide and 4\sv5-dibromosalicylanilide. Specified cleaning agents are alkali metal soaps and synthetic anionic and nonionic detergents. The chelating agent is preferably the tetra-sodium salt of ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid. Specified alcohols are methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, iso-propanol, ethylene glycol and propylene glycol. The pH of the composition is preferably between 10 and 10.4, and is adjusted to this value using a 10% solution of potassium hydroxide, or a 10% solution of sulphuric acid, as required.
