Abstract
In a continuous process of forming a sintered metal sheet, metal powder such as Fe, Cu, Ni, Al, Co, Ti, Mo and their alloys is compacted into a green sheet by rolling, and forming operations such as punching, pressing, rolling, cutting are carried out in the sheet prior to sintering, the waste green material being crushed and returned as powder for further use. According to the drawing (not shown) minus 40 mesh metal powder is stored in a hopper under a protective atmosphere and fed to a blender (3) where additions such as C, hydrides, activators, lubricants and metals may be added prior to rolling at (7) to form a green sheet (8) of 70%-90% density. The sheet is fabricated at (10) and the waste material is returned via a ball mill to the hopper (1). The fabricated sheet is heated at 1600 DEG - 2200 DEG F. in furnace (12) and by introducing suitable gases the sheet may be carbonized, decarbonized, nitrided, deoxidized, chromised or nickelised in the chamber (18). The sheet may also be infiltrated with e.g. Cu. The sheet may then be hot rolled as at (15) and (16), cooled by sprays (17) and further rolled etc. at (20). All the operations from the green sheet stage may be carried out under a controlled atmosphere e.g. H2, CO, N2.
