Abstract
Impure beryllium hydroxide is purified by treating it with 10 to 50% excess concentrated sulphuric acid, heating the mixture at above 300 DEG F., diluting with deionized water to a concentration of 50 g. BeO per litre, filtering off silica, alkaline earth metal fluorides and other insoluble impurities at pH 4, diluting the filtrate containing beryllium sulphate to 10 g. BeO per litre, adjusting to pH 5.3 with ammonium hydroxide, boiling with agitation, filtering to remove remaining impurities, adjusting to pH 5.5 to 7.5 with ammonium hydroxide and filtering off pure beryllium hydroxide. Preferably an aqueous slurry of impure beryllium hydroxide containing 15 to 35% BeO is added continuously to excess concentrated sulphuric acid over such a period of time that a temperature of above 300 DEG F. is obtained.
