Abstract
Commercial beryllium hydroxide is purified by forming therefrom a solution containing beryllium sulphate and impurities other than silica and alkaline each metal fluorides, adding to the solution a chelating agent to retain in solution the said impurities and adding ammonium hydroxide solution to precipitate beryllium hydroxide. Suitable chelating agents are the tetrasodium salt of EDTA, diethylene triamine penta-acetic acid and trisodium hydroxyalkyl ethylene diamine triacetate. The beryllium sulphate solution may be prepared by introducing a slurry of the commercial beryllium hydroxide continuously into excess concentrated H2SO4 over such a period of time as to reach a temperature of 300 DEG F., thereby eliminating the conventional baking step, filtering the reaction liquid to remove silica and alkaline earth fluorides, diluting the filtrate with de-ionized water and adjusting to about pH 3 with ammonia. Alternatively, commercial beryllium hydroxide is reacted with 50% excess concentrated H2HSO4, the reaction mass is baked at about 260 DEG F. for about 3 hours, the baked mass is diluted with de-ionized water, silica and alkaline earth metal fluorides are removed by filtration and the filtrate further diluted is adjusted to pH 3 with ammonia. After addition of the chelating agent, the pH is adjusted to pH 6.5 with ammonia, the solution is boiled, the pH again adjusted to pH 6.5 and filtered to obtain substantially pure beryllium hydroxide.
