Abstract

1,055,749. Paper-making apparatus. BLACK -CLAWSON CO. Oct. 8, 1963 [Oct. 8, 1962], No. 39613/63. Heading D2A. In paper-making apparatus in which stock is delivered between two travelling wires 50, 51, a plurality of deflectors 70 are mounted on both sides of the forming zone, in engagement with the adjacent wire to guide the direction of travel of the wire while providing for outward flow therebetween from the forming zone. Each deflector assembly 70 comprises an actual deflector 90-preferably of wear resistant material-mounted on base plate 88, supported by plates 95 which are rotatably and horizontally adjustable on brackets 71. When an assembly 70 is angularly adjusted the deflector 90 is preferably changed so that its face 93 (Fig. 5. not shown) is kept parallel to the wire. Holes 102 in brackets 71 allow the number and distribution of the deflectors to be varied. The deflector on one side of the. wire may be offset relative to the deflectors on the other side. Water is not removed from the forming zone by suction, but its removal under gravity is controlled by the deflectors converging the wires (Fig. 6-9, not shown) and skimming water off the surfaces of the wires, and by the distribution of the deflectors, and thus of the open spaces between them, being varied. As the paper web leaves the forming zone suction boxes 75 and 77 cause it to adhere to wire 50 while suction box 78 which draws additional water out of the web to lubricate wire 50, and suction box 82 transfer the web to felt 83. Each wire has a fixed guide roll 50 and a movable guide roll 61 with guide unit 65. Headbox 55 is of the type described and claimed in Specification 931,978. Wire changing is facilicated by the front frame supports 23, 24 and the back supports 20, 21 being mounted on two cantilevers 13 (Fig. 3, not shown) and by supports 23, 24 having no cross-bar at the top. Couch roll 40 is mounted beneath one cantilever while couch roll 41 is mounted on a third cantilever underneath the other cantilever 13.
