Abstract

Absorbent stretch fabric has some weft and/or warp yarns of elastic material. The fabric, made from interwoven weft (3) and warp (1, 2) yarns, with at least some of the latter being looped, has at least one weft and/or at least one warp yarn made from an elastic material. The other yarns parallel to the elastic yarns are made so that when the elastic yarns are at rest the other yarns are twisted, allowing the article to be stretched in the direction of the elastic yarns by a given amount. The ratio and direction of the elastic yarns depends on the required elasticity and direction of stretch, and can be between 10 and 90% in either or both directions and e.g. 33%. The looped yarns are of a non-elastic material, and can be cut to give a plush effect.
