Abstract

The safety lighter (1) uses no solid, liquid, or gaseous material in a state of ignition. Tobacco is ignited by a catalytic process at the level of a fine grille of treated platinum (6). Air is first drawn through a cigarette (7), pressed on the grille. This draws volatile liquid of the alcohol or hydrogen/carbon families against the platinum grille. The catalytic process follows. There is a tank with absorbent material e.g. cotton wool (2) to hold the combustible liquid. The tank has an automatic air inlet valve (3,4).

Description

The object of the invention is a lighter which does not produce a flame and does not use carbon in ignition.

Smokers have long beaten the lighter, that is, obliquely struck a flint with an iron or steel blade. The spark produced in this action can ignite a tinder leaf. Later a small cylinder of ferro-cerium Rubbed by a notched rim, could produce sparks capable of igniting a wick soaked in light essence .Finally we used for the same purposes piezoelectricity which made it possible to remove the wheel. However, it remains compulsory to provide the lighter with a tank of liquid fuel such as gasoline. This provision is a cause of subjection .

The object of the invention overcomes the drawbacks inherent in their embodiment by eliminating any wheel or push mechanism. The invention consists in using the suction of air through the virgin cigarette, this suction causes vapors of a catalyzable liquid soaking a cotton pad, and pass them through a very thin platinum blade provided with many holes. The immediate effect of catalysis ignites the end of the cigarette and the device returns when at rest, it must be specified that the soaked cotton can be soaked with alcohol or with certain commercially available essences. The cotton is contained in a small tank fitted with a valve or a small valve controlled by suction alone. can be cylindrical, has at the part opposite to the valve a tapered re-entering end for guiding the cigarette and its small base receives a very thin plate of perforated and treated platinum, serving for the catalytic manifestation at the free end of the a cigarette.

The appended drawing illustrates, by way of example, an embodiment of the device according to the present invention. Figure 1 shows, seen in section along the longitudinal axis, the body C3 of the lighter, the cotton flakes soaked in fuel at (2] .The suction valve is here formed of a perforated cage t3], containing a small light ball (4) .The upper part of the lighter is provided with an inverted frustoconical guide Cs3 closed at its small base by a very thin grid comprising numerous holes and made of platinum (S), against which the body (7] of the cigarette comes generally supported with a filter nozzle e] on which the lips are supported. During the first aspiration, the ball (4] lifts in the cage (3], the air passes through the soaked cotton (2] and arrives at the platinum grid 6], where the phenomenon of catalysis occurs by triggering the combustion of tobacco.

This invention applies to the construction of lighters for smokers, which constitutes its most remarkable application in the consumption of cigarettes.
