Abstract
The solar energy pickup includes two hemispheres (1, 2) of transparent plastics material fastened together by two circular ribs (1a, 1b). Inside the two transparent hemispheres are two further hemispheres (3, 4) similarly fastened together and made of stainless steel. The outer surface of the stainless steel is coated in black paint giving it a very good coefficient of absorbtion for the sun's radiation-especially the short IR radiation. The upper metal hemisphere (3) has an inner concentric hemisphere (5) arranged so that they define a channel between them. Heat transfer fluid such as water circulates between the two surfaces. The fluid enters the channel through a pipe (7) near the join between the upper and lower hemispheres, and leaves through a second pipe (8) at the top of the sphere. The non-directional pickup absorbs considerably more heat energy than a similar size plane pickup surface.
