Abstract

Redn. of FeCl3 to FeCl2 is carried out with a reducing agent contg. S C62, opt. mixed with a relatively small amt. of SCl2 or S. Process is useful for the redn. of FeCl3 obtd. as by-prod. in industrial processes, e.g. chlorination of Ti and Al ores (ilmenite or bauxite). The chloride cpds. formed can be recycled to the chlorination process, if suitable, or used for other industrial purposes, e.g. sulphochlorination, reaction with CS2 (giving CCl4) or CO (giving COCl2) or can be subjected to fractional dist., giving Cl2 and a bottom prod. contg. S2Cl2 suitable for recirculation to the redn. stage.
