Abstract

A catalyst contg. 5-20 wt.% Gp. VIB metal in oxide form and 0, 1-10 wt.% Gp. VIII metal oxide form, with an Al2O3 carrier, is prepd. by (a) mixing Al(SO4)3 and NH4OH in aq. soln. at pH 5.5-6.5, to ppt. a basic Al sulphate; (b) dissolving the basic Al sulphate and a sol. Gp. VIII metal cpd., which decomposes to the oxide, in an Al chloride hydrosol with wt. ratio Al: Cl' of 0.9-1.4:1;(c) mixing MoO3 or a soluble Gp. VIB metal cpd., which decomposes on heating to the oxide, with an aq. soln. of urea and hexamethylene tetramine, and dissolving the mixt. in the hydrosol; (d) dispersing the hydrosol as droplets in a hot oil bath, to cause gelation of the hydrosol; and (e) ageing the hydrogel spheres at a temp. which causes decompsn. of the residual urea and hexamethylene tetramine, and washing, drying and calcining the aged spheres. The catalyst is used for hydro-desulphurisation of petroleum fractions, e.g. residual fuel oils.
