Abstract
In the preparation of silica- alumina macrospheres to serve as hydrocarbon conversion catalysts or components thereof, an aqueous alkali metal silicate solution is acidified with a mineral acid used in sufficient concentration to provide an acid anion/alkali metal equivalent ratio of from 0.75:1 to 1:1 and a relatively weak organic acid in sufficient concentration to increase this ratio by a factor of from 1.3 to 2 and the resulting acidified solution is admixed with an acidic alumina sol and sufficient urea to effect from 150 to 250% neutralization of the acid anion content of the admixture upon total hydrolysis or decomposition of the urea to ammonia, before being dispersed as droplets in a hot oil bath, aging, washing, drying and calcining.
