Abstract

The leaching soln is obtd from a hydrometallurgical process, where the soln. contains two or more ionic constituents which can be sepd. by pptn. The novelty is that the major part, but not all, of one or more constituents is pptd. in a first stage (a) and removed from the soln., and then the residual part of the constituent(s) is pptd. in a second stage(b). The amt. of constituent(s) removed in stage(a) is pref. 60-95%, and the process is pref. employed for the pptn. of Fe3+, Al and /or Cr ions from a soln. contg. Ni, Cu and/or Co. The process may also be used for the pptn. of Ni from a soln. which also contains Mg; or the pptn. of Cu from a soln. contg. Cu and Ni. The treatment is used in large scale metal winning processes where only a min. amt. of reagents is required so operating costs are reduced and environmental pollution minimised.
