Abstract

Horizontal continuous casting process, where a stream of molten metal falls stepwise towards a channel leading to the mould. In a first step (a) the melt is scrubbed with gas from a surface which has a height 300 mm above the top of the channel leading to the mould. In (a), the gas is pref. blown upwards into a region of the melt where a vortex is formed. Pref. the melt flows downwards into a vessel with a stepped base; baffle plates are located above the higher portion of the base to create a scrubbing zone fed with gas, and a settling zone in which the melt flows downwards to a channel leading to a chilled mould. Used esp. for the continuous casting of ferrous metals and their alloys. The melt is scrubbed with inert gas, e.g. argon, to remove air, gases and non-metallic inclusions, thus improving the physical and mechanical properties of the casting.
