Abstract

L'invention concerne un procédé pour obtenir un métal par réduction d'un chlorure. Selon l'invention, on dispose d'un élément de chauffage à arc ayant au moins une paire d'électrodes tubulaires coaxiales et separées, formant une chambre d'arc reliée à une chambre de réaction. L'arc amorcé entre les électrodes est soufflé par un courant de gaz dans la chambre à arc. On introduit dans ce courant chauffé par l'arc, un métal alcalin ou alcalino-terreux et un chlorure. Les produits de réaction sont projetés tangentiellement dans la chambre de réaction, si bien que le sel gazeux plus léger s'échappe et le métal élémentaire liquide s'écoule vers le bas. Application à la production de titane et de zirconium.
