Abstract

The two parts which are to be joined permanently are flat or slightly curved. The lower unit (3) has a bore (4a) which is counterbored (4b) on the lower half. The upper unit (1) has a plain bore (2). The two parts are located on the same centreline beneath a punch (6). The punch has a small diameter (9) above a larger diameter (7) with an intermediate taper (8). The punch forces the edges of the top piece to follow the profile of the bores of the lower unit and leaves a smooth inner bore equal to the large diameter of the punch.
