Abstract

Bipolar element for electrolysers for prodn. of alkali metal chlorate or chlorine, of the series type consisting of a tank having anode and cathode chambers and a separator, has >=1 of the chambers shaped like a bell from a deformable sheet, the sheet and the electrode within it being supported from a fixed frame outside the chamber. The supporting frame does not contact the electrolyte and is therefore not subject to corrosion. The wall between the chambers forms a perfect seal against corrosion by the electrolyte.
