Abstract

Liq. to be treated is put through a primary settling zone from which resulting sludge is put to a primary digester while clarified liq. is percolated through a completely immersed, biological filter bed. Effluent from the filter bed is subjected to secondary settlement and secondary digestion producing a purified water sepd. from sludge for drying. The biological filter is pref. aerated mechanically, e.g. with pumped recirculation etc. entrained air. The biological filter medium, e.g. moulded plastic material, should have a specific contacting surface of at least 85 m2 per m3 and a voidage coefficient of not less than 65% the daily pollution load should not exceed 10 g BOD5 per m2 of filter medium contacting surface. The primary and secondary decanters and digesters as well as the percolating biofilter can be built into a single tank packaged unit.
