Abstract
Method of treating sulphur in the form of its oxides, esp. when appearing as a by-product or waste product from combustion of a material contg. S, transformation of H2S into S, roasting of metalliferous sulphide ores e.g. zinc blends, etc., consists of contacting the sulphur oxides with a gas contg. O2 and particles of an alkaline earth oxide or their thermal precursors at 600-1050 degrees C in proportions to form an alkaline earth sulphate, stoichiometrically. The sulphate formed is recovered and unreacted gases are recycled directly or indirectly into the reaction chamber. Alkaline earth sulphates are cheap to produce and readily disposable. They are cheap materials, lime, dolomite, CaCO3.
