Abstract

In the carbonisation of anthracite in a shaft furnace the heat for the process is produced from the combustion of part of the volatile matter evolved at the top of the furnace and reintroducing it mixed with air in the central zone of the shaft, the air/gas ratio being such that excess air is never present. In the mfr. of electrodes using anthracite as the source of carbon, (most of) the heat of carbonisation can be produced from the combustion of the volatile matter, so that a considerable saving of electrical power results.
