Abstract

A food for fish and shellfish is prepd. by mixing fish, scrap fish and/or scrap meat, in a raw but finely divided state, optionally after removing water by draining or pressing, with 20-30% based on the total weight of the mixture, of a material contg. a finely divided starch and optionally physiologically essential materials, in a manner such that water content is above 40-55%. The mixture is then extruded at 90-120 degrees C for at most 1-3 mins. and the extruded material is subdivided into pieces, solidified and dried to obtain a product of satisfactory keeping properties. Used to feed fish in breeding grounds, basins and lakes etc.; previous processes have either involved a pre-cooking resulting in protein denaturation, or a drying stage which is costly and also gives in inferior product contg. denatured protein an extrusion. The above process gives a better product avoiding denaturation and is also cheaper.
