Abstract

The graphite electrodes are disposed between tuyere level and the bottom of the shaft. The fuel gas or liquid is injected either separately or together with 50-70% of the furnace flue gases which are recirculated after preheating to 1200 degrees C and are in addition to the tuyeres injected at various other levels down to the lower third of the furnace, their function being to maintain a uniform distribution of reducing gases over the furnace cross section. Prefd. hydro-carbon fuel used is methane gas preheated to 600-800 degrees C. Blast furnace uses very little coke as a result of which less slag is produced, less lime stone required, and less S is present.
