Abstract
Oxidic iron ore is charged to a slag layer maintained at not less than 1350 DEG C. in a furnace rotating at not less than 6 r.p.m. and inclined at 0-40 DEG to the horizontal while a hydrocarbon fluid is introduced below the surface of the slag layer and an oxidant is introduced to the furnace above the slag layer. A secondary fuel may be introduced with the oxidant, and the exhaust gases may be used to preheat or prereduce the ore charge. The hydrocarbon may be introduced into the slag layer, when a low carbon product results, or into the metal bath wereby the latter is carburized. In the former case a part of the oxidant may be introduced into the slag below the hydrocarbon so that impurities are oxidized out of the reduced metal.
