Abstract
Compounds of formula (I) are new: where n is 1 or 2; R is -CH2-, -CH2-CH2-, -CH-, -CH- R' and R2 are same or different H, CH3, C2H5 or C3H7, and their Li, Na, K, morpholine, ethanolamine, diethanolamine and triethanolamine salts. Hypocholesterolaemic, and antiatheromatous activity; they promote the metabolism of ethanol and acetaldehyde. LD50 orally in rats is 80-120 mg/kg. The compounds have similar pharmacological activity to 3,5,3'-triiodothyroacetic acid. One compound was given to rats on an atherogenic diet for 2 months; they showed no difference from control animals on normal diet at autopsy. Chickens on an atherogenic diet were given 0.8 mu g/kg. of (I) and were protected from cholesterolaemia. 0.5 to 15 mg/day orally; 0.25 to 5 mg/day rectally; 0.5 to 3 mg/day parenterally; 5 to 50 mg/day percutaneously.
