Abstract

Alloys contg. Cr are blown with a mixt of oxygen, carbon dioxide and a rare gas. The carbon dioxide decomposes into CO and O2 absorbing some heat released by the reaction between the O2 input and the Cu in the melt and the temp. of the melt is thus kept below 1750 degrees C above which temp the refractory lining becomes rapidly degraded. Method is esp. useful for stainless steel and ferrochrome.
