Abstract

Solid contaminants are removed from aqs. surfactant (esp. alkali soap) lubricants for metal working by introducing the lubricant into a hydrocyclone at a temp. at least close to the temp. at which the lubricant is used, recycling the purified lubricant, and discarding the impure sludge leaving the tapering end of the hydrocyclone. The sludge is pref. concd. by passage through further hydrocyclones and then processed for disposal by (a) reacting with a cpd. giving water-insoluble cpds. with water-soluble soaps or (b) treating with hot acid, separating the upper fatty acid layer, and precipitating the cations in the lower layer by adding an alkali(ne earth) metal hydroxide.
