Abstract
A certain amt. of CO is added to the ammoniacal nitriding gas in the accelerated gas nitriding of metals, esp. ferrous materials, to produce a wear-, pitting-, fatigue- and corrosion-resistant surfance. Effective nitrided zones can be produced in as short a time (up to 4h) as in the bath nitriding process and it is possible to treat parts of any shape and size and in large series. The nitriding gas can contain, e.g. 10% CO and pref. also contains a neutral carrier gas, e.g. N2, Ar etc.
