Abstract

Steel and similar alloys are surface nitrided in the gaseous phase to form a surface layer >5 mu thick of epsilon-iron nitride and a N-rich carbonitride phase based on cementite, the layer being homogeneous and continuous giving a negative reaction test with 5% ammonia cal copper chloride. Beneath this layer is a diffusion zone comprising a solid soln. of C and N in ferrite. The process is effected at a temp. above the critical transformation temp. and the article is thermally treated such as to prevent the formation of martensite in the core or produce fatigue strain in the quenched ferrite. The treatment improves the fatigue, abrasion and corrosion resistance of the article.
