Abstract
The oxide mixed with a suitable quantity of C is passed through a furnace traversed by a column of ionised gas at high temp. The metal oxide is thus reduced to the metal and the CO2 formed evacuated from the chamber the metal vapour is rapidly quenched by gas such as Ar or pref. by a spray of the same metal in a cooling tower. The liquid metal is collected at the bottom of the tower and may be tapped off at intervals. May be used for prep. of Al, Mg, Fe, Zr etc.
