Abstract

1352972 Sintered uranium oxide compositions GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 10 Aug 1971 [10 Aug 1970] 37506/71 Heading C1A A dense, sintered body of a uranium oxide containing composition, as hereinafter defined, is produced by a method which comprises the steps of heating a compacted body of the uranium oxide containing composition in particulate form to a temperature in the range of 900 to 1500‹ C. in an atmosphere consisting essentially of an initial mixture of carbon dioxide and hydrogen, either alone or with an inert gas, which mixture reacts to give the presence of water vapour and carbon monoxide, sintering the body in said stmosphere at a temperature in the range of 900 to 1500‹ C., wherein said initial mixture of carbon dioxide and hydrogen is selected to give a ratio of oxygen to uranium atoms in the sintered uranium oxide within the range of 1À98 to 2À04 : 1, and thereafter cooling the sintered body in an atmosphere of dry hydrogen, wet hydrogen or a mixture of hydrogen and carbon dioxide. Uranium oxide containing composition denotes compositions capable of being sintered and includes uranium dioxide (UO 2 ) absolute; mixtures of uranium oxide having an oxygen to metal ratio of up to 2À25 which could include mixtures of uranium dioxide with one or more of uranium trioxide (UO 3 ), uranium tritauctoxide (U 3 O 8 ), uranium sesquidoxide (U 2 O 3 ), uranium pentoxide (U 2 O 5 ), or uranium tetroxide (UO 4 ); and the foregoing uranium oxide containing compositions with one or more ceramic additives, gadolinium oxide (Gd 2 O 3 ), titanium oxide (TiO 2 ), silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ), aluminium oxide (Al 2 O 3 ) and combinations thereof.
