Abstract

Minerals are subjected to a gaseous treatment using HCl, a reductant, and opt. a solid chlorination agent. The HCl is mixed with other gases, pref. =50% vol. CO2, 25% water vapour, 5% O2, 5% Cl2 and N2 is not >3 times the vol. of the HCl. The gases of different compn. are injected at different points in the furnace to fluidise the charge and provide efficient sepn. of metal values. Minerals with volatile metal values are treated efficiently and economically as most of the material can be regenerated and/or recycled.
