Abstract
Selective chlorination on a partially halogenated carbon of a haloethane of formula: CH3.CHXY (where X and Y are chosen from H, F, Cl, or Br) is performed by substitutive chlorination in which the reaction takes place in the presence of small quantities of nitrogen monoxide at temperatures between 150 and 1450 degrees C. The molar concentration of NO should not be more than 30% of that of the halogenoethane, pref. 0.01 to 10%. No is introduced with the Cl2, and may be diluted with inert gases. Process esp. for making 1,1,1-trichloroethane from 1,1-difluoroethane.
