Abstract

In a reverse osmosis plant for desalinating seawater or brackish water the osmosis cell or cells (1) are located at a level sufficiently below the saline water supply (6) and the brine discharge point (8) so that the hydrostatic pressure resulting from head (2) provides the major component of the pressure at the saline side of the osmosis cell or cells needed to bring about reverse osmosis. The osmosis cell or cells may be located about 500 metres underground and purified water pumped (9) from the cell or cells to the surface. By this means the power consumption of the plant is substantially less than that of a conventional reverse osmosis plant.
