A method of recovering chlorine from iron chloride obtained as a by-product in the chlorination of a titaniferous material containing more than 5% by weight of iron oxide, which method comprises the following steps: (a) subjecting to partial dechlorination, in the presence of one or more suitable reducing agents, the ferric chloride obtained as a byproduct of the chlorination of a titaniferous material containing more than 5% by weight of iron oxide and/or the ferric chloride obtained as a product of the oxidation step (b); (b) subjecting to an oxidation reaction, in the presence of oxygen or of a gas containing molecular oxygen, at a temperature comprised between 300ºC and 1200º c, the ferrous chloride resulting from the previous step and/or the ferrous chloride obtained as a by-product of the chlorination of a titaniferous material containing more than 5% by weight of iron oxide, to produce ferric chloride and ferric oxide and C) recycle the resulting ferric chloride to the partial dechlorination stage.
