A method for extracting zinc from an oxidic, finely divided and practically free volatilesizable arsenic and sulfur zinc material, characterized in that it comprises the steps of: - introducing the finely divided zinc oxide material and finely divided carbonaceous material into a moving stream of an oxygen-containing gas and dragging it with it, at a temperature such that steam reduction of zinc occurs and all other non-volatile components assume a fused form of free spill; - separate these other components; - and condensing the zinc vapor to obtain metallic zinc.
