Abstract

1,036,499. Treating refuse. I. L. HALL. May 11, 1965 [Oct. 19, 1964], No. 42508/64. Heading F4B. A furnace for burning insulation off cables and the recovery of metal comprises a hearth 3 sloping down to the front of the furnace, a burner 6, a smoke burning chamber 10 with a burner 11 for burning the smoke and an outlet 14 near the bottom of the smoke burning chamber. The smoke burning chamber 10 is divided from the hearth 3 by a bridge wall 50 terminating below the furnace roof or formed of chequerwork, and secondary air inlets 7, 15 are provided near the hearth and at the bottom of the smoke burning chamber. A hood 25 collects gases escaping from the furnace door and feeds them to the air supply fan 26. A second independent smoke burning chamber with a gas or oil fired burner may be provided, and a photo-electric smoke detector may operate dampers to bring the second smoke burning chamber into use. A damper in the furnace stack enables gases to be passed through a washing plant if necessary. A furnace burning off lead may share a stack with a furnace burning off rubber or P.V.C. to reduce the concentration of smoke or poisonous fumes in the chimney gases.
