Abstract

Process for the preparation of D-(-)-amino acid amides. The process for obtaining D-(-)-amino acid amides of formula (I) where R is hydrogen or a radical derived from an optionally substituted amino acid, comprises reacting a salt of an ester of a D-(-)-amino acid of formula (II) where R' is a linear or branched alkyl group containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms and X is the anion of the salt with an aqueous solution of ammonia at a temperature of between 0 and 40 degree C. Amides (I) are important intermediates for the synthesis of semisynthetic [beta]-lactam antibiotics by enzyme means.
