- Other components of the load circuit experience power losses as well. Especially at lower regulation levels, the power consumed by a lamp discharge being low, the power of cathode incandescence constitutes a considerable portion of the power of the entire circuit.
- a problem with the ballast shown in fig. 1 is the measurement of a load power in such a manner that the actual lamp power can be measured at a sufficient accuracy without the power required by incandescence having a significant effect on the measuring result.
- EP-589 081 discloses an alternative way of providing a measurement of the "arc discharge” current by using a preheating transformer; the voltage sensed at resistor (R1), through which the lamp current is passing, being representative of the "arc discharge” current.
- WO 97/01945 shows a current sensor impedance for measuring lamp current and another impedance for measuring a current proportional to lamp filament current, the ratio of the values of the impedances being chosen according to ratio of current amplitudes at certain branches of the circuit.
- a signal which is a measure for a difference between the voltages across the impedances is used as a measure for the lamp current.

As for these measuring methods, a problem is how to achieve a sufficient accuracy, since there are losses also in other circuit elements, such as ignition capacitors, lamp inductances, and switching transistors.
- An object of this invention is to introduce a circuit connection for a ballast, whereby the power of a low-pressure discharge lamp, especially a fluorescent lamp, can be measured in such a way that said inaccuracy factors in the measurement can be eliminated.
- This is performed by feeding through the lamp a separate direct-current signal, which is used for producing a direct-voltage signal proportional to the effective resistance of the lamp.
- Said direct current through the lamp brings about a further advantage that the dark stripes visible on the surface of the lamp bulb, or a so-called striation effect, at lower regulation levels and especially at lower operating temperatures, can be avoided.
- Fig. 2 of the drawing illustrates one embodiment of the above-described measuring principle.

- the direct voltage measurement has a wide dynamic range and the measuring signal can be readily utilized in the control block of a ballast.

It is also obvious that the control signal of the oscillator A1 in the circuit CO1 - CO2 can be digital as well, the sub-block II including necessary circuit elements for processing digital information, e.g. by means of a programmable micro-controller.

Claims (3)
- Ballast électronique pouvant être commandé ou régulé pour une lampe à décharge à basse pression, en particulier une lampe fluorescente, comprenantde sorte qu'un signal de mesure proportionnel à la puissance de la lampe est produit en tant que différence entre lesdits éléments d'informations de mesure.un inverseur en demi-pont (TR1, TR2, V2, V3) ou une source alternative correspondante pour fournir une énergie en courant alternatif à haute fréquence à un circuit de charge,un circuit de charge, dans lequel une lampe à décharge (LL) doit être connectée, ledit circuit de charge comprenant une inductance de limitation de courant (L2) en série avec la lampe lorsque la lampe est connectée, un courant de filament alimentant une capacité (C3) en parallèle avec la lampe lorsque la lampe est connectée, et un élément (R4) pour produire un courant continu traversant la lampe, ledit circuit de charge étant connecté au point milieu dudit inverseur en demi-pont ou à ladite source alternative correspondante,un bloc de régulation ou de commande (A1/I, II) pour régler la fréquence de l'inverseur ou d'une source alternative correspondante pour réguler l'intensité lumineuse de la lampe,des éléments (R2, R3, C4) pour mesurer un courant proportionnel à la puissance du circuit de charge et pour conduire les informations de mesure (Umeas.) au bloc de régulation ou de commande, etdes éléments (R5, C5, R6) directement en parallèle avec la lampe lorsqu'elle est connectée, pour mesurer la tension continue produite à travers la lampe par le courant continu produit par ledit élément de production de courant continu (R4) et pour fournir les informations de mesure au bloc de régulation ou de commande (A1/I, II)
- Ballast selon la revendication 1, dans lequel chacun desdits éléments de mesure de courant et de tension (R2, R3, C4 et R5, C5, R6) comprend au moins une résistance (R2 ; R6) et au moins un condensateur (C4 ; C5) connecté en parallèle avec la résistance.
- Ballast selon la revendication 1 ou 2, dans lequel l'élément produisant le courant continu traversant la lampe est une résistance (R4) qui est connectée en parallèle avec un condensateur (C2) compris dans le circuit de charge entre l'inductance (L2) et la lampe (LL), et dans lequel les éléments de mesure de courant continu (R5, R6, C5) sont connectés entre la connexion de ladite résistance (R4) avec la première borne de lampe et la borne de lampe opposée.
