- This invention relates to respirators of the type usually known as dust masks, such respirators including a filter of fibrous material for trapping and holding particulate matter in the form of dust or fume, or aerosols in the form of mist suspended in air that passes through the filter.
- respirators are comprised of a face piece formed from stabilized textile fibers, and which has been appropriately molded or otherwise formed for it to extend over the nose and mouth of a user, and, which is held in that position by elastic straps attached to the face piece and which are passed over the user's head to resiliently hold the respirator in situ over the user's nose and mouth.
- Such dust masks are entirely temporary and fully disposable, in that once the filtering capability of the filter has been exhausted due to clogging of the filter, the user has no option other than to discard the dust mask and replace it with another, unused mask.
- Heat from the inhaled air raises temperature of the thick (extra thick in case of metal fume) filter fibers from exhalation. This heat is then transferred to the incoming air upon inhalation. A raise in temperature as low as 2° - 3° causes great psychological and physical discomfort to the user.

- the fIlter material itself can be replaced with great facility, merely by snapping off the filter retainer member 42, removal of the used filter member 44 and discarding it, repositioning a replacement filter member 44 over the central clamping ring 22, and by then snapping on the filter retainer member 42, to hold the filter member appropriately clamped onto the frame 14, the ribs 24, and the central clamping ring 22, thus inhibiting leakage of contaminated air at the peripheral edges of the filter member 44.
- the user will, by a virtue of movement of the user's head and which may be a relatively rapid movement, exert significant kinetic forces on the respirator. This can cause either discomfort to the user, or lifting of the edges of the face piece 12 out of sealing engagement with the user's face, thus permitting inhalation by the user of contaminated air.
- the frame 14 is formed as a dihedral, such that all portions of the frame 14 are in as close proximity to the user's face as can be arranged. Further, by connecting the straps 16 directly to the dihedrally shaped frame 14, further resistence to movement of the frame 14 is provided, in that the straps also will resist any attempted lateral movement of the ends of the frame 14, or, any attempted rotational movement of the frame 14 about the general centrai axis of the respirator.

- the filter 44 is encased within an extremely thin-walled shell of thermo-formable plastics sheeting, the rear face 30 of which has been vacuum formed to provide ribs 24a providing air channels as in the previous embodiment, and which extend up to a central opening 32a in the back wall 30a.

Claims (8)
- Appareil respiratoire (10) constituant un masque à poussière et qui comprend une pièce frontale (12) formé d'un matériau analogue au caoutchouc, des soupapes d'inhalation et d'exhalation (34, 26) associées à la pièce frontale (12) et une cartouche filtrante (44) à travers laquelle de l'air peut être inhalé dans la pièce frontale (12), cet appareil étant caractérisé en ce que les soupapes d'inhalation et d'exhalation respectives (34, 26) se combinent l'une à l'autre en un ensemble unitaire (22, 34, 26) et sont disposées concentriquement, la soupape d'inhalation annulaire (34) étant disposée radialement à l'extérieur de la soupape d'exhalation (26) et concentriquement vis-à-vis de celle-ci, la soupape d'inhalation (34) communiquant avec un ensemble de filtration sensiblement plat (14, 30, 44, 42) soutenu par l'ensemble à soupapes (22, 34, 26) et qui s'étend latéralement vis-à-vis de l'axe d'agencement concentrique des soupapes.
- Appareil respiratoire selon la revendication 1, dans lequel l'ensemble à soupapes comprend un corps de soupape sensiblement rigide qui est disposé à l'intérieur d'une ouverture frontale de la pièce frontale et qui est connectée directement à celle-ci, le corps de soupape comprenant une paroi cylindrique centrale (22) qui constitue un siège de soupape interne pour la soupape d'exhalation (26) et un siège de soupape extérieur à la paroi cylindrique précitée pour la soupape d'inhalation (34).
- Appareil respiratoire selon la revendication 2, dans lequel la paroi cylindrique (22) comprend un croisillon interne (28) pour supporter la soupape d'exhalation (26) et fournit un support direct à la soupape d'inhalation annulaire (34), la paroi cylindrique étant supportée sur le corps de soupape par un second croisillon (32d).
- Appareil respiratoire selon l'une et/ou l'autre des revendications précédentes, dans lequel l'ensemble de filtration (14, 30, 44, 42) comprend une paroi arrière imperméable (30) supportée directement par le corps de soupape et qui se termine, sur ses bords, par un élément de châssis périphérique (20), la paroi arrière comportant des nervures (24) espacées s'étendant vers l'avant sur sa surface qui se présente vers l'avant afin de supporter et de positionner un élément de filtration (44), les nervures formant des canaux sensiblement non obstrués pour l'air filtré qui est acheminé directement à la soupape d'inhalation (34).
- Appareil respiratoire selon la revendication 4 comprenant un élément de retenue perforé (42) qui est fixé de manière à pouvoir être retiré au châssis périphérique (20) de la paroi arrière pour soutenir l'élément de filtration (44) en position correcte contre les nervures espacées (24).
- Appareil respiratoire selon l'une et/ou l'autre des revendications 4 et 5, caractérisé en ce que l'ensemble de filtration (14, 30, 44, 42) est dièdrique en plan et s'étend latéralement vis-à-vis de la pièce frontale (12) jusqu'à ses côtés opposés, fournissant de la sorte une surface de filtration fortement accrue tout en minimisant les tensions imposées à la pièce frontale (12) par des mouvements rapide de la tête de l'utilisateur.
- Appareil respiratoire selon l'une et/ou l'autre des revendications précédentes, comprenant un harnais (16) fixé directement à l'ensemble de filtration (14, 30, 44, 42), permettant ainsi un mouvement libre de la pièce frontale (12) relativement à l'ensemble de filtration et l'isolation de la pièce frontale vis-à-vis des tensions exercées sur le harnais.
- L'appareil respiratoire selon l'une et/ou l'autre des revendications précédentes, comprenant un déflecteur d'air (50) associé à la soupape d'exhalation et qui dirige l'air exhalé vers le bas à l'écart des yeux de l'utilisateur.
