Description

DEVICE TO PLACE PROTECTIVE COVERS ON GROWING FRUIT The placing of protective covers on fruit in back-yard fruit trees to protect the fruit from fruit bats and birds normally requires the use of a stepladder, and climbing into the branches of the trees with plastic bags and string to tie the bags over the fruit. This, to say the least, is a laborious and time-consuming task, fraught with danger of falling.
This device is intended to allow the placing of the protective cover over the fruit without the user leaving the ground, so avoiding the dangers of falling and injury, and greatly simplifying and speeding up the process.
The device consists of two nesting canisters, either light-weight metal, plastic, or similar material. The inner canister is supported by a rod attached to its bottom. The rod may be telescopic or sectional, to cater for differing fruit heights.
The outer canister carries on its rim four equally spaced posts, which, in the resting position, project above the rim of the inner canister. The support rod of the inner canister passes through a hole in the centre of the outer canister, which has a tubular guide attached to its bottom to ensure correct vertical movement. A lanyard is attached to this tube, and is used to pull the outer canister down.
To use the device, a resilient band is stretched round the four posts, and a cover bag of cotton, plastic, or other light material is inserted inside the inner canister, with its mouth upper most. The device is presented to a fruit until the fruit enters inside the cover, and the lanyard is pulled. The outer canister moves downwards, and the posts move below the level of the inner canister rim, releasing the resilient band, which closes the mouth of the bag round the fruit.
The device is then retracted and reloaded with resilient band and bag.

Claims (4)

1. A fruit covering device comprising two nesting containers, mounted on a supporting rod, the outer container provided with four retainint posts upon which is stretched a resilient band, the container being able to slide down upon the supporting rod so as to release this band when it impinges upon the edge of the inner container, the released resilient band then closes a cover around the fruit, the outer container returns to its position due to the action of a compression spring mounted on the support rod., the device can be adjusted for height by the addition of extension sections to the supporting rod.
2 The fruit covering device of claim 1 which uses expansion springs connecting the two containers together instead of the compression spring on the support rod.
3. The fruit covering device of claim 1 constructed of light metal, plastic, fibre-glass, or any suitable material, and suitable physical size..
4. The fruit covering device of claim 1 which utilises a telescopic rod connected to the supporting rod instead of extending sections. James Christopher Bowling November 14, 2003
